Fiona Dalton

This week Carly and I went to visit our friend & colleague Fiona Dalton!
Fiona is of course one of our special judges in the Umbrella Prints Trimmings Competition 2013 and is mentally prepped to help choose this year's Judges Award prize in just over a week folks!

Fiona is a wonderful crafter and author of blog and book Hop Skip Jump & is now co-owner of a new fabric shop in Adelaide created with her lovely business partner Jane. The Drapery is a welcoming space where you can buy a range of beautiful fabrics including organic cotton knits, linens, cotton voiles, shot cottons; as well as printed fabrics by the likes of Nani Iro, Echino, Liberty and Umbrella Prints; it is also a space where you can learn how to sew and be inspired.

Fiona has sewn with our fabrics before (see below and in her book) and has the most incredible sense of texture and attention to detail.  If you own one of her handmade toys you are a very lucky person as they are soo beautiful.

We had a lot of fun catching up for a chat and checking out all the latest scissors, sewing patterns, threads and creations as well as taking a few snaps in the soft bright light.  We can't wait to see what Fiona chooses as her favourite Trimmings Competition entry on the 7th of June.

Jodi Levine

An order of Kimono Red Grand Hearts to the offices of Martha Stewart Living caught our attention and soon our fabrics were on their way to the office of Jodi Levine Kids Editorial Director/Designer in New York.  Carly had for years been collecting the now coveted set of Martha Stewart Kids magazines and knew of Jodi's impeccable skills as a crafter and editor.

\

Jodi Levine has had an amazing career making and crafting a world of beautiful things for Martha Stewart- invitations, delicious children's party ideas, gifts and decorations in endlessly inspiring styles, flavours and themes.  Jodi's creative eye and her ability to source materials for her projects from unusual & often overlooked places is genius and even though at the top of her game we reckon her approach to sharing and tutorials is super friendly and accessible.

We know Jodi loves colour and pattern, encourages creative experimentation and likes to have fun with design; her ability to really look and find meaning through making is so inspiring- we were very excited to have her accept our invitation to be on our guest judging panel this year xxx

stalling, stuck? Umbrella Prints Trimmings Competition

Do you ever feel a sudden dip in confidence after you begin an exciting new creative project? In the studio on Friday I started on some new artwork I have been thinking about for a long time, but about an hour in an uneasy sinking feeling and thoughts of' 'this isn't working','this doesn't look as good as I thought it would' crept in; oooh I know this feeling I've had it before.

I thought others out there entering the Umbrella Prints Trimmings Competition this year may have experienced this feeling; after all it is a challenge and it isn't easy if you are really keen to push the design limits of what you can do with our littlest pieces of fabric.  Additionally you will be putting your work out there for all to see, people that you don't know will be looking; take a look at our judges this year; it can be intimidating!

Of all the packets of Trimmings we sell only a percentage of our dear customers will make it through with their packet to actually enter.

Back to that raw feeling, like the floor has dropped, I have had to train myself to recognise it and keep going, keep pushing and keep making THROUGH it.  Despite the instinct to drop what I am creating and bin the lot I know that this feeling just means I'm doing something new (even if its just new to me) that there are no maps or directions or even a destination I will recognise or even the certainty of 'arriving' anywhere.

Aptly put by Monet:

'When asked for advice on painting, Claude Monet told people not to fear mistakes. The discipline of art requires constant experimentation, wherein errors are harbingers of original ideas because they introduce new directions for expression.  The mistake is outside the intended course of action and it may present something that we never saw before, something unexpected and contradictory, something that may be put to use'. (Shaun McNiff's  Trust the Process An Artist's Guide to Letting Go)

Carly and I have come across a few bloggers saying they were nervous to enter the Umbrella Prints Trimmings Competition which surprised us but then we remember that 'feeling' and know why.  So if you have had your packet of Trimmings out looking at you, or started making/doing something only to shove them quietly back into a drawer; we encourage you to get those fabric pieces back out and look again with fresh eyes.

We celebrate every entry whether 'beginner' or 'professional' and so do our judges who have all 'been' there; the most intimidating & severe judge is probably you!

So with all those things in mind we reckon break out your Trimmings, break out in a sweat if you have to, remember to have fun and most of all show us and yourself what you can do!!!

“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making
mistakes, and having fun.” - Mary Lou Cook

Film in the Fridge

We are so pleased to have a quilter on board as one our Trimmings Competition judges this year! Ashley Newcomb from Film in the Fridge is an amazing and prolific maker of beautiful quilts from Vermont, USA- and who better to judge the creative use of small cut up pieces of fabric than a quilter! Though we have never visited Vermont we have heard that it is a beautiful place with picturesque hills and valleys; which you can often see in the background of Ashley’s finished quilt photographs.

If you aren’t already familiar with Ashley’s quilts here are just a few pictures of the beautiful quilts she has buzzed up over the years and take at look at her fabulous blog & online shop for so much more inspiration.

Ashley of Film in the Fridge has such an adventurous spirit and modern quilt aesthetic and we welcome aboard this year!

Tips on taking your Trimmings packet photo

Don't let a dull photo of your Umbrella Prints Trimmings packet spoil all of your hard work and creativity... follow a few of our tips for clear and bright Trimmings photos.

1. Get near some natural light, but not so bright that it casts deep shadows. Use a milky clear plastic tub or its lid to filter out the bright light ... an overcast day is like a giant difuser.

2. Use a simple background setting like white paper, a table, tiles or concrete...

3. Lay out all of your pieces like a mini quilt, pop your Umbrella Prints Trimmings paper label on top so we can see all the pretty fabrics you discovered. The packet in this photo is a Mixed pack by the way.

4. Don't use a flash!

5. Get in nice and close.

6. Take a few photos .. like 5 -10 so that you can pick one that came out nice and clear... the sun can pop out just at the right moment in one photo.

7. Crop your photo in just a smidge if you need to. Crop off the pair of sneakers in the background you didn't notice whilst taking the shot.

We hope this helps.. good Luck!
